Wyvern Private Hospital, a state-of-the-art private surgical and rehabilitation hospital in the Sydney suburb of Terrey Hills, has today opened its doors to the Northern Beaches community.

The $100 million plus hospital, was formally opened by Dr Sophie Scamps, Member for Mackellar, in an onsite ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring government representatives, healthcare leaders and community representatives.

Surrounded by pristine bushland and bringing together a unique blend of nature, architecture and medicine, Wyvern Private Hospital delivers urgently-needed surgical and rehabilitation services to Sydney’s north, an ageing catchment forecast to see a 23 percent rise in retiree-aged residents by 2031.

The hospital’s facilities include eight operating theatres including a hybrid theatre and cardiac cath lab, 76 surgical and inpatient beds, nine ICU beds and clinical support units including medical imaging, pathology, rehabilitation, hydrotherapy pool and pharmacy.

The hospital is owned by the $3.6 billion Australian Unity Healthcare Property Trust (AUHPT) and leased for 30 years to Wyvern Health, which operates under a doctor-owned model.

Dr William Sears, Founder and Chairman of Wyvern Health, said the new hospital will redefine the experience of a hospital stay for patients in Sydney’s northern suburbs.

“Today is a monumental day for Sydney healthcare, with more residents in the Northern Beaches now able to access private surgical and rehabilitation services closer to home, and experience what is perhaps the state’s most natural and tranquil clinical setting.”

“Wyvern is the result of a decade of planning and the dedication of hundreds of healthcare professionals. We’re honoured to be entrusted with delivering care without compromise to our patients, doctors, staff and the local Terrey Hills community.”

Chris Smith, General Manager Healthcare Property at Australian Unity said both the local community and investors will benefit from the operations of Wyvern Private Hospital.

“Australian Unity is proud to be partnering with Wyvern Health to deliver world-class health infrastructure to meet Sydney’s current and future needs. The hospital is a key asset in our healthcare property portfolio and will deliver long-term income returns for investors whilst providing critical care to the community,” said Mr Smith.

Construction of the hospital began in April 2022 and was accompanied by comprehensive biodiversity management and environmental stewardship plan that included the planting of 250 banksia trees, installation of 39 nestboxes and clearing of litter to protect local wildlife.  Wyvern Private Hospital is designed to meet a Gold WELL Building Standard, which recognises buildings that foster a culture of health, wellbeing and quality of life indoors.
