Confirmation letter for health insurance
When you purchase Australian Unity Overseas Visitors Cover, you’ll receive a confirmation letter instantly via email.
It doesn’t matter whether you join online or over the phone, your confirmation letter will be emailed as soon as your application for health cover is processed. The confirmation letter will be sent to you in PDF format so that it’s easy for you to include with your visa application or forward to your immigration liaison.
It is important to note that under some visas, you may be required to meet condition 8501. Condition 8501 means that you must have and maintain adequate health insurance for the whole of your stay in Australia.
All our Working Visa Covers meet condition 8501. None of our current Non-Working Visa Covers meet these requirements.
When do you need a confirmation letter?
If you are visiting or moving to Australia and hold a temporary visa, you may be required to take out health insurance as part of your visa conditions. For example, if you are applying for a Visa Subclass 482 or Visa Subclass 485, you are required to have a minimum level of health insurance and to maintain it for the duration of your stay in Australia.
Some visa types also require that you provide evidence of adequate health insurance before your visa will be granted. Our Working Visa Covers meet the requirements of visa condition 8501.
Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA)
If you come from a country that has signed a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, you may be able to apply to the Department of Immigration for an exemption from the health insurance visa requirements.
You cannot enrol in Medicare until after you have arrived in Australia though, and eligibility for reciprocal arrangements is assessed on a case-by-case basis. That means that if you are applying for your visa from outside Australia, you will still need to arrange complying insurance to meet your visa requirements. If you then successfully enrol in Medicare after your arrival in Australia, you can obtain an exemption from the Department of Immigration.
