After finishing his Bachelor of Theology, Ben spent two years in a European monastery (entering the monastery on his 21st birthday). Later, he decided to leave and came back to Australia, where he worked as an internal auditor. Then, a chance to work as an English teacher in Japan presented itself, and he spent a few years there.
On returning to Australia he worked in the public service and then ran his own business. Later he began working in the Property & Office Services team at Australian Unity, starting out in the mailroom.
When discussing future career options with his wife that he would encourage his children to consider – technology was top of mind. However it was then that Ben realised that he still had another 20-25 years of work ahead of him and that technology was an exciting and growing field that he should get into himself!
So, Ben enrolled in a computer science degree at Deakin University. When the Technology Leadership team heard about what he was studying technology, and saw his potential they reached out to him - soon after he was working for Australian Unity's technology team. Despite his non-technology background, the leadership recognised his valuable skills and were keen to see him succeed. They offered guidance and support, helping him navigate the new terrain and providing him with opportunities to grow and learn. Now, Ben has moved from being Commercial Analyst in the Technology Team into a new role as Cloud Engineer.
For Ben, one of the best things about working at Australian Unity is the people. From senior executives to frontline employees, he's found everyone to be approachable, personable, and genuine. This sense of community and camaraderie has made his transition to a new career path all the smoother.
“I’ve really enjoyed connecting with people across the business and in a range of roles, and I’ve enjoyed seeing people grow both personally and professionally over time, as well my own, and sharing that journey with each other,” said Ben.
“Over my career that spans multiple roles, countries, and organisations, the reason I’ve stayed with Australian Unity is the connect with the organisation’s purpose and its long-term vision. What really sets us apart is that the organisation is not solely driven by profit but instead focuses on wellbeing– and that is reflected in the people that work here and the existing work that we do. This point of difference because evident to me during COVID. Working from home in my role I could have been working for any large corporate – but the difference in Australian Unity is that we are directly supporting, and making a difference, to people in the community,” said Ben.
Mark Gay, Group Executive Technology said that it was very special event and wonderful way to recognise the diversity of our workplace.
“I felt very honored to be host the Technology Diwali event. The Indian community are a huge part of the Australian community and our community at Australian Unity, and it was special day where we can celebrate bringing together multiple cultures and communities in what was a fantastic event. Thank you to Sheetal and the team for making such a wonderful contribution to our culture,” said Mark.

Traditional Indian dress, food, sand drawing and Bollywood music were all enjoyed as part of recent Diwali celebrations.
The Technology and Retail teams held events to recognise the Diwali, the festival of lights which is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.
Over 50 people attended the Technology Team’s Diwali lunchtime event, which was coordinated by Sheetal Solanki, Senior Engineer.
We were so excited to share our Diwali celebration with our friends at work. We decorated the kitchen area with elements of the Diwali such as Rangoli (sand drawing), candles, Swastik, Shubh Labh Hangings, Lakshmi’s feet and food. We had a lot of food from sweets and snacks– as sharing food is key part of sharing joy and happiness during this festival. As part of this festival, we worship Lord Lakshmi who is the Goddess of wealth & prosperity. So, to start the festivities we invited Mark Gay to light candles and place flowers around Lord Lakshmi’s portrait,” said Sheetal.
