What's changing?
New laws have recently come into effect which make it illegal for an online gambling company to accept a credit card payment online.
With the introduction of the Interactive Gambling Amendment (Credit and Other Measures) Bill 2023 by the Federal Government, credit cards, amongst other payment methods, can no longer be used as payment method for gambling services.
This Bill aims to prevent gamblers from spending borrowed money they may not have the means to repay, and brings online gambling in-line with other forms of gambling for which credit cards also can’t be used.
More details on the bill can be found at the Australian Parliament House website.
From 18 April 2024, changes have been applied to Australian Unity Bank credit cards to prevent and thereby block them from being used as a payment method for online gambling services.
This block relies on information provided by those organisations classified under the gambling merchant code. Any transactions identified from these operators will be automatically declined.
Debit cards are not impacted by this change
Customers can still use an Australian Unity debit card linked to a transaction account as a payment method for online gambling services.
